“muse” Your fire is my fire.                  -Ben Saphiro They say having a muse is part of our life script; a form of modern day questing. A muse shares in your passion and adventure – tells your story. A muse is a source of inspiration; a touchstone of places, activities and things that in a way inspire peace, joy and creativity in others.                                                                                   Introducing, Darina Anstis, A.K.A Madusa Karma; the latest muse at Adele Dejak. She represents the modern African woman, stunningly beautiful and unapologetically bold with an eagle eye for fashion. Darina has a sense of creativity…

The Model Next Door – Conversation with John David Kimeu #ModelsSeries

By | Adele, Adele Dejak, africa, African design, favourites, Photography, Tribal Chic, Uncategorized | No Comments

This is the second installation of our #ModelsSeries. The intention of the series is to interrogate how models are modelling the design space in Africa. We are long past days when models were seen as clothes-hangers. The process to select a model for a campaign or for runway is more conscientious than the process of choosing a life-partner. After-all, marriage is til separation – associations are eternal. The model has to have the right look, has to fit with your brand and has to embody the spirit or mood of your campaign; this is not always easy to find. John…

Runway Reverence – Our Grand AFI Finale

The road to the runway was dippy and bumpy, but seeing the Precious collection walk down that final runway dissipated the angst and distress felt in preparation.  To begin with, the South African Visa office is more scrutinous than the US Defense Department. They will investigate you in your previous life, so the visa wait for my assistant was a pins and needles affair. But at the same time, they were very diplomatic and gracious and thankfully, even though there was a torturous one-day delay which meant changing flights, she got her visa processed. Armed with enthusiasm and intent, we…

Collection Recollection – #PreciousCollection

By | Adele, Adele Dejak, AFI Fashion Week, Africa-Forward, African design, African designers, Dhamani, exhibition, fashion, fashion show, FashionWeek, Photography, Precious | No Comments

Our latest collection has been titled Dhamani, which is the Swahili word for precious. This collection is celebratory – it’s about valuing what matters and that’s life, love and culture. The Dhamani collection sees East Africa as not only the incubator of life but as the eternal witness to the evolution of man. It was inspired particularly, by the story of Hell’s Gate Gorge in Naivasha. It is said that a volcanic eruption, which killed over a hundred Maasais, sculpted the dramatic, stunning walls of the gorge. With this collection, we wanted to recreate the process and have intense and…

Road To #AFICapetownFashionWeek II – Lake Naivasha Shoot

By | AFI Fashion Week | No Comments

At the heart of our campaign was the idea of creation and of life. There are two elements we associate with this and that’s fire and water. Both elements are potent but they could not be more opposed. Fire is intense and instantaneous, while water, though it can be as tempestuous as fire, is more willful, methodical and unhurried. The Hell’s Gate gorge for example, was carved and sculpted by water over years while pieces from the Precious Collection were created and shaped in almost volcanic temperatures. This contrast was important. We see water not just as the…

Road to AFI-Capetown Fashion Week – Hell’s Gate Gorge Shoot

By | Adele, Adele Dejak, AFI Fashion Week, Dhamani, FashionWeek, Precious | No Comments

We have been invited to show at this year’s AFI Fashion Week in capetown. To get a sense of the Adele Dejak brand, AFI commissioned a visual campaign. The intention of the campaign was to contextualize the brand and explore the link between design, culture and place. When considering possible locations for the shoot, Adele wanted intensity and immensity, which is why she went with the Hell’s gate gorge and Lake Naivasha. We also filmed at Globe roundabout in Nairobi’s CBD as we wanted to capture the energy and pace of Nairobi and at the Adele Dejak studio and showroom…

By | accessories, Adele, event, exhibition, Fair, fashion, finding beauty, Inspired By Africa | No Comments

Luxury Connect Africa is a premium platform connecting African Luxury with the rest of the world. It was launched this January in Paris and saw the most celebrated designers in Africa showcase their products and engage in conversations defining African luxury. Traditionally Africa has been associated with want, not luxury, and these types of platforms are helping bring to focus an emerging creative and consumptive space. We were invited to exhibit and participate in the round-tables. It was an incredible experience; we met other talented and pioneering designers and got to connect with an interested public in Paris. The…
