I have always been intrigued by a photo of a Mangbetu woman in the book ‘Africa Adorned’ by Angele Fisher.
Whilst researching over the years I kept referring back to this photo.
I felt it was dramatic and powerful and I really wanted to incorporate it into a design without the extreme piercing requirement.
It was during my research on my HOPE collection that I reviewed my ‘post its’ in my books and stumbled again on this woman.
Then I had a light bulb moment and voilà the Mbadon earpiece was created.
Why Mbadon, you may wonder. Mbadon is my middle name given by my grandmother. It is from the TIV tribe. My tribe. It means more beautiful.
My grandmother was a single mother of 2 and always believed women were ‘more beautiful.’ A statement that is completely true and every African woman should live by. The Mbadon earpin complements the African woman’s beauty, making them radiate with elegance and confidence.
This piece is in homage to all our ancestors and to you.
AD brand mission is to empower women and indeed make them feel stylish, poised and more beautiful.
I tested the ear pin prototype for a few days before giving my team the green light.
The most important feature is that it can be worn with a mask, and so mask friendly plus it’s incredibly light you can’t feel a thing.
We hope you love it like we do.
